Holding Up the Sky A Chinese Folk Tale

An elephant was walking along one day and saw a hummingbird lying on its back, with its feet straight up in the air. “Whatever are you doing?” asked the elephant.

“I heard the sky will fall so I’m holding up the sky,” replied the little bird.

“That’s ridiculous,” the elephant mocked.

“I can’t do it alone,” said the hummingbird, “but I will do what I can and will make a difference.”

With this last letter in my year as President, I want to encourage all of you to do what you can and know you make a difference. I’ve listed a few Zonta activities to demonstrate why we do what we do:

• Sorting clothes in the CWEE boutique- A single mom chooses an interview outfit that makes her feel confident and she lands a job that helps move her and her family from welfare to self-sufficiency.
• Activity night at Excelsior: A girl who has no positive holiday memories creates new memories decorating Christmas stockings or hunting for Easter eggs and fills in some of the gaps in her childhood experience.
• SafeHouse welcome bags: A battered woman leaves her home and everything in it to find safety and shelter, gets these minimal supplies, stabilizes and gets counseling to help her move on with her life.
• Team of Golfers, prizes, sponsors: Every dollar raised by Zonta volunteers funds the projects we love so much.

Thank you all for doing what you can. You all make a difference.

Lois

The club would like to thank Lois and her board for all their work this year. Lois has been a tireless leader and stepped up with enthusiasm while navigating a new job. We continued to move forward toward our goals of enhancing the lives of women and girls from one-on-one mentoring (another accomplishment for Lois), providing scholarships, supporting teachers and doing what we can abroad through Zonta International programs. We are most lucky to have her and thank her so much for all the time she devoted to the administrative duties required.
