March 2014 President’s Letter

Club President’s Message

from Lois Britton

A civilization flourishes when people plant trees under which they will never sit. –Greek Proverb

Hello Everyone,

We had such a great meeting in February!  An Olympic games warm up activity mixed us up and got us all thinking and talking—thanks Carol J and Jan for that.  Those who had read the newsletter and knew some of the information it contained had the chance to win bottles of wine.  We had three—count ‘em—three guests!  One who has already submitted her application to join.  We honored Jeannie Snider as our One for All Award winner.  And we welcomed Joann and Greg’s new baby girl, Danika, to our world.  No wonder it was such a great meeting!

 March Meeting

At our March meeting we will hear who the Nominating Committee has slated to be officers and board members.  We will vote on those at our April meeting.  Our guest speaker will be from Freedom Service Dogs.  The Service Committee will make their recommendations on the proposals we received for grant money.  It will be an eventful evening, so you don’t want to miss it!

Excelsior Gala

Debra Ureel, Jeannie Snider, Carol Leffler, Ellen Fitzpatrick, Sharon Faircloth, Jan Hoyt, Barb Anders, and I sold raffle tickets at Excelsior’s Gala on Friday, March 7. We sold $9,200 worth of raffle tickets!  That’s almost $3,000 more than last year!  Yaaaaay!  Many hands make light work, and so it was that evening as we worked the crowd and tried to make sure everyone there had the opportunity to participate in the raffle.  We were given a half-page ad in their program and our name was announced several times throughout the evening.  With eight of us working, we represented Zonta very well!  Thanks, ladies, for giving your time and energy.  I am proud to be associated with you.

One for All Award Goes to….Jeannie Snider!

At our February meeting we honored Jeannie Snider with the One for All award for her contribution to the club this last year and all the years since she joined in 1987! This year, as she has for many years, Jeannie served on the Finance Committee.

When I began my term as President in June, most of the golf tournament work was already done.  Jeannie coordinated the printing of the save-the-date card and registration brochure and all the signs for the golf course (and her company provided the printing.)  She secured prizes and sponsors.  She arrived at the golf course before anyone else to get the registration tables set up and organized all the awards for the luncheon.  She didn’t just do that last year, she does it EVERY year!

Jeannie played a huge role in the success of our holiday fund raiser, too.  She taught everyone on the Finance Committee how to make ornaments to kick off the holiday sales this year.  She ended up making the bulk of the ornaments because some of the committee members were all thumbs (a couple decided their talents were better suited to writing thank you notes to golf sponsors.)  She made arrangements with the owners of the facility to let us use it.  She was there early in the morning and made sure the place was left in good shape late in the evening when it was all over.  She managed the Jerry’s sales and organized the delivery of the products and member pick up.  Besides that, she volunteered at service events, including the Project Cure regional event just last month and Excelsior’s gala this month.

We are a service organization and without the money we raise each year, we could not do any of our good deeds.  We thank Jeannie for her commitment to the finance committee and to the club as a whole.

Have a good month and let’s keep “planting trees.”
