June 2014 President’s Letter

Dear Zonta friends,

Our new year is off to a great start! First, we received wonderful news from the IRS that we have been approved as a 501(c)(3) organization. This will open up new opportunities for our club to raise more funds and assist more women in need. How this status affects our club activities will be a topic at the July 12 retreat. Many thanks to the club members who worked on obtaining the 501(c)(3) status, and especially to Terri for her expertise and diligence in pursuing this achievement.

Earlier in June, we hosted our annual golf tournament, which was a successful fundraiser and a great event for everyone who participated. Virtually every club member contributed to this event, by golfing in a foursome or recruiting golfers, by obtaining donations and sponsors, by volunteering on the day of the event, and by devoting many hours to organizing this event. A shout-out to the entire Finance Committee, and especially to Carol L, Pat, Jeannie, and Ellen!

We begin our new year with 22 vibrant members. Many thanks to everyone who has stepped up to chair or co-chair a committee: Sharon (Advocacy), Mary and Barb (Service), Ellen and Carol L (Finance), Lois (Public Relations), Jan and Carol J (Membership), and Emma (Program). The club is so fortunate to have dynamic women, ranging from our charter members, Mary and Terri, who have been with the club since “day one,” to our newest members, Debra K and Grace, who bring energy and talent to our club. The strength of our club is in its members, including Marcy whose leadership abilities will shine in her new role as District 12 Governor; Kathy, who assists with arrangements at the University Club and has been a longtime vital supporter; Deb U, whose enthusiasm for our mission is contagious; Jean G, who is a champion of our service projects, especially at Flo Crit; Julia, whose savviness has been a boon to our club; Beth, who thoughtfully and wisely manages our scholarships and teacher grants; and JoAnn whose track record of involvement has already generated high expectations of what she will contribute to the club.

It is a privilege for me to serve as the club President, and one that I am looking forward to. Please plan to attend the retreat on July 12 at the Mount Vernon Country Club. Our new year holds much promise if we all continue to share our time and talent, and nurture our relationships with each other.

Warm regards,
Suzanne
