Happy New Year from the Finance Committee!
Again, thank you to everyone for a very successful holiday fundraising season. With everyone’s help, we sold over $31,700 in plants, poinsettias, wreaths, Jerry’s and Koeze’s products. As a result, were able to add over $13,000 to our service account!
Congratulations to our 3 top sellers: Marcy O’Toole (>$10,500), Jeannie Snider (>$3,300), and Jan Hoyt (>$2,100).
And, many thanks to all the members of the Finance Committee for all their hard work: Pat C. for her spreadsheet skills and managing the Brown’s sales (poinsettias and cactus); Ellen F. for helping with the Brown’s sales and crunching all the numbers for us; Jeannie for managing the Jerry’s sales and all her organizational work prior to delivery of the products and member pick up; Julia B. for locating the warehouse space and for pestering and encouraging members to sell; and Marie Kriss for her fantastic marketing skills and ideas. Thanks also to those who helped with delivery!
Stay Tuned! The 2014 Golf Tournament is just around the corner!

Service
Excelsior
On December 5th, Zontians including Lois, Suzanne and Barbara, plus our friend of Zonta (Carla Freeman) made Christmas stockings with the girls. It was another heartwarming event of watching these girls design, decorate, glue and generally have a fun time with these stockings. We have done this now for (3) years and it just gets better and better each year. After the stockings were finished, out came the treats of homemade fudge from Carla, cookies, crackers and drinks.
Freedom Service Dogs
Graduation Ceremony – December 14th
Freedom Service Dogs graduated 19 client/dogs at the Englewood Civic Center. The volunteers were JoAnn(Greg) Mattson, Carol Johnson (Grace) and Barbara. This was one of the most memorable, emotional events for a FSD graduation. It was at least a (3) Kleenex tissue event for some of us. As you can imagine with this large group of graduates it was an enormous task to serve cake and punch to the audience. In addition to a couple of cakes and punch for the attendees, our club donated a case of hand sanitizers, which was very well received. Thanks to all of the volunteers at this event and to Marianela for donating the hand sanitizers
Mariposa House
Christmas cookies were delivered to Mariposa House for the holidays.
SafeHouse Denver
The Welcome Bags were delivered to SafeHouse. Please continue bringing toiletries to our meetings to continue our commitment to deliver 15 Welcome Bags each month until May 31. Items needed: toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, disposable razors, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion.
ZI Club Service Recognition Award
Mary, Suzanne and Marianela prepared the paperwork and photo collage for our application of the club’s work with Excelsior.
ZI District Service Recognition Award
48 Welcome Bags were assembled and delivered to SafeHouse by Mary, Barbara, and Kriss the end of November. They included drawstring backpacks and large size polo shirts. The service project information was sent to Ann Hodgson, District Chair for consideration of their award.
Membership
Jan and Carol J. would like to thank our 2013 NEW members: Julia, Marianela, and JoAnn. We couldn’t have asked for three women who better represent Zonta’s ideals.
Julia: Thank you so much for rounding up golf teams in June and for nailing down a wonderful warehouse for us to use for our winter fundraiser. Delivering plants, greenery, candy and nuts to the streets of Denver would have been ugly – especially with the weather we experienced on delivery day!
Marianela: Your enthusiasm is contagious. Your camera got a workout at our golf outing and we love the ideas you have for next year’s tournament. For those of us who attended the absolutely great day at your home on Saturday, January 11– kudos to you. It was such a relaxing fun time to be with friends for an afternoon free of business, free of volunteering – just enjoying the company of one another. Thank you again for your hospitality.
JoAnn: Our newest “newbie” was selling plants before she was an “official” member. She worked the Freedom Service Dog December graduation in Englewood the day after her initiation….and brought her husband who worked along side of us. JoAnn is also planning on contributing to the Area medical supplies service project the first of February. It seems she has been busy in her first month of membership.
We really are so fortunate to have you three as members as we start the new year. We would like to clone you all! So, for all members–please let Jan and/or Carol J. know of prospective members….just like Julia, Marianela, and JoAnn!

“Zonta Says No”
Empty Shoes Event
$16,815 was raised in gross sales through ticket and art sales, partnership donations and personal donations. A big part of this was a substantial $5,000 donation made by a client of Terri Otley. After expenses, the net was $10,910. Our club’s share was twofold. First, $726.63 was donated in the club’s name to ZISVAW. That amount goes toward our commitment of 1/3 of our service funds to international. Secondly, the club received $1,454.71 in service funds. So, all in all, our participation was well worth it. I hope all those that attended, enjoyed it as well!
Program
Thanks so much to Jan Hoyt and her sister and brother-in-law, Dave and Ann Stolfa for hosting the Holiday Party held in December. It was fun to see everyone, enjoy a lovely dinner, wine left over from the Empty Shoes Event and catch up with old friend Joanne Herlihy.
A big “thank you” to Marianela for hosting Lunch and Game Day at her house! It was a wonderful mastermind from Lois to get us together in January, simply to enjoy each other’s company. Lois also provided a wonderful homemade soup and snacks and we got to wish Jan a very happy birthday and share in her yummy birthday cake! Then it was game on!
The Area 3 Service Event at Project Cure on February 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and we’ll be back on meeting schedule at The University Club February 27th. Our speaker will be Joshua Evans, director of the Learning Source.
