February 2016 President’s Letter

February 19, 2016

Word of the day:  “Altruism”

“I don’t know if it’s surprising or paradoxical, but the best thing people can do to be happy is to do something for others.”

Matthieu Ricard, Ph.D.
Biochemist and Buddhist Monk
The “happiest man in the world”

The definition of altruism is when we act to promote someone else’s welfare, even at a risk or cost to ourselves.  While some people believe that humans are fundamentally selfish, recent research suggests that the first and quickest impulse is to cooperate, not compete.  Mr. Ricard’s research found that altruism results in deeper and more positive social integration, a diversion from personal problems, and increases positive emotions, such as kindness and thoughtfulness.  It is entirely possible, then, to assert that altruism enhances mental and physical health.

Then, Zontians must be the happiest and healthiest of people!  As proof, look back on what has happened since November:

  • SafeHouse: In connection with the “In The Spirit” program a family was adopted for the holidays, which included a mom (Ashley) and her two children (Beth and Nick).  Members shopped and provided household items, clothing and a toy for each child.
  • Excelsior: Members participated in a fun activity at the Genesis Cottage decorating ornaments and filling Christmas stockings.  In January the game of bingo was played with the girls.
  • Freedom Service Dogs: Our club helped serve cake and punch after the December graduation ceremony.
  • Empowerment: In December, holiday gifts for 20 children were provided by members of our club.  In early February, we volunteered to kick-off the return to Columbine.  Four members hosted 13 women to play bingo, with refreshments and prizes.
  • Central Visitation Program:
  • Silent Witness Campaign at Auraria Campus.
  • Thanksgiving dinner with Bridging the Gap.

Plus, there’s more events coming up for the rest of the year:  The Service Committee has been busy coordinating other service opportunities.  Also, the annual fund distribution is in the process of being compiled by the Service Committee, with the help of Treasurer Sharon Faircloth, and, after board approval, it will be presented to the membership at the March general meeting.  A very important meeting to attend!  The Finance Committee is planning the next golf tournament in June and another wine tasting.

Two speakers are planned in February and March:

In February, Sarah Berg is the Director of The Phoenix Center at Auraria and will be speaking at our meeting.  The Phoenix Center at Auraria’s mission is to implement campus response services, provide education, and facilitate dialogue related to interpersonal violence in the Auraria community.

In March, Doralee Larson, Executive Director of the Denver Domestic Violence Coordinating Council which manages the Denver Metro Domestic Violence Fatality Review, will be speaking to our club.  The Denver Metro Domestic Violence Fatality Review committee has existed since 2008 and is considered the most research-based DV Fatality Review in the country.

So, the point of this letter is – Be Happy!  Be Healthy!  Keep supporting Zonta!

Your President –
Carol Leffler
