August 2014 Newsletter
Membership
At the end of July, the Membership Committee hosted a new/prospective member meeting at Tony’s on Broadway. Debra Knapp attended along with three potential members: Marie Cardinale, Pat Drake, and Chris Kremzar. Many thanks to Suzanne Fasing and Mary Moser for joining us and contributing to the discussion. We are hoping at least two of these ladies will join us. Grace Petrie was unable to attend along with three or four prospective members so we will be scheduling another meeting in the next six-eight weeks. If you have any friends that you would like included, please be sure to let Jan and/or Carol J. know. New members bring new energy to our Club – a good thing! We expect to have prospective guest members at our August meeting and we know you will help us make them feel welcome.

Advocacy Events
At the retreat, we talked about what the difference is between service and advocacy. I thought Marcy made a great distinction between the two. Service is what you can do today to make things better. For example, paint and new furniture – think SafeHouse, Baby Bucks store, Empowerment. It makes their environment more comfortable but doesn’t change the underlying issues. Advocacy is about what you can do to help women in the future and what can be done about driving social change.
There are several ways to approach advocacy and we plan to bring issues and ideas to you throughout the year.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church

This was a most popular and successful event in which we partnered with Bridging the Gap to bring a family-style Thanksgiving Dinner with all the trimmings to their participants. In fact, it was so successful that they are wondering if we can expand it to accommodate more people! We will discuss at the August meeting what we are able to provide and what we are able to do to continue this wonderful way to build family and community at the holidays. To expand, we will need more volunteers for food and clean-up!
Finance
The Finance Committee is busy finalizing the contract for the 2015 golf tournament to be held at Red Rocks Country Club. We are all excited about this great new venue!
But, more importantly, all members of the Finance Committee are beginning work on getting everything organized for the annual holiday fundraising. The holiday sales materials will be presented at the September general meeting, so stay tuned.

Service
CWEE
On August 8 Sharon, Lois and prospective member Allison Hutson sorted clothes for the CWEE Boutique. Arapahoe County just expanded its contract with CWEE, so there will be more participants and a greater need for business casual and professional clothing for them to wear to class and to interviews. Without our help sorting donated clothing and replenishing the Boutique, the Boutique would be a mess!
CWEE’s annual awards luncheon will be held October 22 at the Hyatt Regency downtown. You may purchase a ticket on the website at www.cwee.org.
The Delores Project
A group of us are planning to attend the fundraiser for the Delores Project at Carmine’s on Penn on Tuesday, September 2, at 6 pm. Cost is $45 for a three course meal. Contact Mary if you want to join us.
Excelsior
August 7th was our monthly activity with 18 girls at Excelsior. Jan, Suzanne, Barb and Carla were the Zonta volunteers. The activity included outdoor games that we played indoors because of rain earlier in the day and it was too wet outside. It was fun watching the girls play with the hula hoops, tossing balls into buckets and playing bean bag toss. Our dear friend Carla made chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies and Jan provided the cold drinks. The refreshments were great as the games were a high energy activity. Our next planned activity is movie night on Thursday, September 4th. If you’d like to join us each month please contact Barb or Suzanne about the process.
The Learning Source
The 50th Anniversary celebration will be Thursday, October 9, at the Colorado History Museum. Volunteers are needed to help with the silent auction and perhaps other needs that night. Cocktail attire is appropriate. Volunteers will be needed from 6 pm to 9 pm. Please contact Mary if you are interested in volunteering. The Zonta II board meeting, originally scheduled for that night, will be moved to another night. Stay tuned for that announcement.
Mariposa House
August 12 was pajama party night at Mariposa House. Our club purchased new bedding for the ladies-sets of comforters, pillow shams, and sheets in many different styles—so they had a variety to choose from. They were delighted with their new bedding! Deb Ureel and Lois Britton made the delivery and brought treats and Bingo to make the evening more fun.
Contact Deb Ureel if you are interested in volunteering occasionally to go to Mariposa House and engage with the women with fun activities. Deb is collecting fun things as prizes and giveaways, such as make-up, costume jewelry, stationery, etc.
Safehouse
Thanks to Allison Hutson for helping with the July mailing!
The SafeHouse Gala is Saturday, October 18, from 4 pm to 11 pm. Volunteers are expected to attend the entire event and wear cocktail attire (the event is blacktie). Wear comfortable shoes as well because volunteers will be on their feet most of the evening. SafeHouse is requesting 5 volunteers, and so far we have 6 members who have said they would attend; more are welcome! Let JoAnn know by or at the August meeting if you are interested.
Members of the club will also donate a wine basket for the silent auction, comprised of wine and wine accessories donated by members. So far 6 members have volunteered to donate a bottle of wine and 1 member (thanks Mary!) to donate wine accessories. Let JoAnn know if you would like to donate wine or wine accessories for the basket, or funds, and she can purchase the wine.
If you want to help with Welcome Bags, we are especially interested in shampoo and floss at this time.
