June 2014 Newsletter
Finance
Our 14th Annual Golf Tournament – The Zonta Club of Denver II Candy Meininger-Johns Memorial Golf Tournament – took place on Friday, June 6, 2013 at Buffalo Run Golf Course.
The Finance Committee would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s tournament a fun-filled and very successful day.
First, a very big thank you to the entire membership of the Zonta Club of Denver II! Everyone (and I literally mean all current club members, recently resigned members, soon to be installed members, and Finance Committee members) participated to make this year’s tournament quite the feat, including:
• Updating the mailing list;
• Save the Date cards;
• Mailing Save the Date cards;
• Revisions to the registration form;
• Mailing registration forms
• Securing a Tournament Sponsor;
• Recruiting golfers;
• Recruiting other sponsors;
• Preparing letters to be used by the club to recruit sponsors and players;
• Soliciting money donations & donations for the “Steal-a-Deal;”
• Giving items for the “Steal-a-Deal;”
• Seeking donations for ditty bags;
• Giving items for the ditty bags;
• Stuffing ditty bags;
• Printing and making signs;
• Preparation of the program;
• Volunteering on the day of the tournament;
• Playing golf on the day of the tournament;
• Taking pictures;
• Setting up; Taking down;
• Writing thank you notes, and
• Reconciling the funds.
Whew – that’s a lot of work! Not all tasks were mentioned, but the above list is just a small representation of everything that needs to be done to prepare for the tournament, and to let everyone know that all your support was a huge help to the Finance Committee.
Also a giant thank you to the “friends of Zonta” who took time out of their day to volunteer with us at the golf tournament:

Service
Service Hours.
Please submit your service hours to Jean Griswold as the year end report needs to be filed by our president.
Empowerment
Please bring non-perishable food to the Retreat to donate to the pantry at Empowerment.
If you would like to volunteer for Mariposa House, Please contact Deb Ureel. She would love it if more members would volunteer.
The Learning Source
There were 33 graduates of the GED program at The Learning Source Graduation on Friday, June 13, 2014, at Red Rocks Community College, who celebrated with family and friends amid tears and cheers for achieving a goal for which each graduate had worked very hard. Many thanks to Jean, Lois, Julia, JoAnn, a prospective member, Allison Hutson, and Mary who made the reception a successful finale to the event.
The 50th Anniversary celebration will be held on Thursday, October 9, at The Colorado History Museum. Silent Auction items are being requested. Please contact Mary if you have anything to donate or a lead.
Excelsior
The June event with the Excelsior girls was planned as a carnival game night but the weather didn’t cooperate. Last minute adjustments were made for an indoor event of stenciling and drawing on paper and bookmarks. Jan Hoyt and Barb Anders had lots of help from the girls at Excelsior. All we had to do is give them assignments of passing out the craft items and directed them in serving popcorn, cookies and soda to much of their delight. We’re sure the girls that volunteered get extra credit or community service points for good behavior. The next event will be in August as we take July off for the holiday. The plan for August is carnival games outside. Please contact Barb if you would like to volunteer.
SafeHouse Denver
SafeHouse Welcome Bags:
Please bring shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, razors, washcloths, to the Retreat. The Club has pledged to donate 15 Welcome Bags per month to SafeHouse this fiscal year.
July Mailing
This mailing is much smaller than previous mailings (250-275) but more labor intensive in that each letter will be personally addressed. Shannon is requesting 2-3 volunteers from Zonta during the week of July 7th (weekdays/business hours). Club members who are interested in helping are asked to email Shannon directly at sboltz@safehouse-denver.org by Monday, June 30, and she’ll coordinate a day/time.
Gala
On Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Ritz – Volunteers. Shannon is hoping for 5 volunteers from Zonta to help with setting up the Silent Auction, and some folks might be asked to help with the tablets used to bid on the Silent Auction items (there will be training provided that night). The time commitment is 4pm to 10pm (possibly 11pm). Folks who are interested should let JoAnn Mattson know, so she can pass on their names to Shannon. They would like to know names by mid-August.
SafeHouse Gala – Silent Auction item. Zonta provided a wine gift basket for the Silent Auction in 2013. Does the club want to do that again in 2014?
Shannon is looking for other organizations to help with SafeHouse fundraisers, so if anyone in the Club knows of an organization that might be interested, please contact Shannon directly at sboltz@safehouse-denver.org.
Freedom Service Dogs
This event was held at Hampden Hall on Saturday, June 7th. There were (9) client-dog graduates that included traditional, military and professional therapy clients. Shon and his dog Rommy were the guest speakers from the military group. Rommy was the first graduate of the Deckers Dogs program and graduated in the Class of 2013. As always, it was a very moving and inspirational event. Sharon Faircloth, Carol Johnson, Ellen Fitzpatrick and Barb Anders served punch and cake to the guests.
Florence Crittenton Services
A Move is a Foot – The Zonta Baby Bucks store is being moved to a new location on the education campus.
CWEE
Thanks to JoAnn, Suzanne, Mary, Sharon and Lois for working in the CWEE Boutique over the last few weeks. We go at least once a month, and twice if we can on Saturday mornings to sort clothes and maintain the boutique. It is a job that is never completed—clothing donations keep coming in—but the goal each visit is to replenish the racks so the young single parents who attend classes at CWEE have business casual and business professional clothing to wear to class, to job fairs and to interviews. We always enjoy working together and getting caught up on Zonta business while we’re at it. If you want to be on the “call list”, contact Sharon or Lois and we’ll let you know the next date we plan to go. The next date tentatively scheduled is July 5 from 10 am to 1 pm.
Membership
We continue to receive sparks of interest from prospective members. Women are finding us through The Denver Post/Your Hub, our website, and through our existing members. We were happy to induct Debra Knapp at our May meeting and we are looking forward to inducting Grace Petrie, who helped out all day at the golf tournament, at our July retreat. In addition, we have two or three ladies who are very interested in Zonta and what we do. One prospective member, Allison Hutson, recently joined the Learning Source graduation volunteers headed up by Mary Moser. Please continue to reach out to your friends and co-workers and let Jan and/or Carol J. know if you would like the Membership Committee to extend an invitation to one of our meetings. We plan to have a new/prospective member orientation in July – stay tuned for more information.
