This Amelia Earhart Day we are highlighting 2023 Amelia Earhart Fellow, Franziska Hild as she shares how the support she received from the Zonta International Amelia Earhart Endowment Fund has allowed Franziska to pursue her Ph.D in Aerospace Engineering. Franziska wants to use her experience to inspire others to follow their dreams and encourage women and girls to pursue a career in aerospace.

Celebrating Amelia Earhart

In February, Zonta Denver II hosted the Area 3 Meeting and honored two very special Fellows; Anne Theurkauf, Aerospace Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder and Kaylee Champion, Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder.

We are celebrating the spirit and impact of legendary pilot Amelia Earhart, one of Zonta International's most famous former members. On 11 January 1935, Earhart embarked on a 2,408-mile trip from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California. The next day, she became the first person to fly solo to the United States mainland from Hawaii. Since she had flown over the Atlantic Ocean five years earlier, this flight also made her the first person to fly across both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
Nearly 85 years after Earhart disappeared, women are still outnumbered in the aerospace industry, making up around 25% of the workforce. As part of our efforts to encourage women to excel in traditionally male-dominated fields, Zonta International annually awards women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering and space sciences with the Amelia Earhart (AE) Fellowship.

zonta says now

Zonta calls for a gender-equal approach to climate action. Recognizing that climate change disproportionately affects women and girls, Zonta emphasizes the need for inclusive policies that address the unique challenges faced by women in climate-impacted regions. The organization advocates for increased representation of women in decision-making roles related to environmental sustainability and climate resilience. By integrating gender equality into climate strategies, Zonta aims to promote a fair and effective response to climate change that benefits all.

Celebrating Women and Girls in May

The month of May is rich with opportunities to celebrate and honor women and girls for their diverse roles and contributions to society. Here are four significant occasions that reflect the spirit of appreciation, recognition, and empowerment.

Mother's Day: Observed on the second Sunday in May in many countries, Mother's Day is a cherished tradition that celebrates mothers and maternal figures. It's a time to express heartfelt gratitude for their unconditional love, tireless care, and countless sacrifices.

International Day of the Midwife (May 5th): This day shines a light on the invaluable work of midwives, who ensure safe childbirth and provide essential maternal and newborn care. It's also a day to raise awareness of the critical role midwives play in promoting positive health outcomes for mothers and infants, emphasizing the need for adequate support and resources for these professionals.

National Women's Health Week (U.S.): This observance, held in the week following Mother's Day, encourages women to focus on their health and well-being. It's a call to action for preventive care, emphasizing the importance of regular check-ups, screenings, and healthy lifestyle choices. By promoting these values, the week serves as a reminder that a woman's health is a cornerstone of family and community well-being.

International Women's Day for Peace and Disarmament (May 24th): This day celebrates the contributions women make toward building peace and promoting disarmament across the globe. It acknowledges the unique and powerful impact women have in conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and advocating for a world free of violence. It's a time to honor their courage and reaffirm the importance of their voices in shaping a more harmonious world.

These events in May remind us of the profound influence women and girls have in various aspects of life, from family and health to peace and global well-being. Each occasion is a chance to acknowledge their achievements and support their continued success.

Hear Karen's Story Live at Pathways to Empowerment: Launching the Future

"I wake up every morning, I go to the blinds, I see the whole skyline, and I think ‘Wow, this is really what my life is like…and it’s all because people motivated me and helped me get to where I am. Every single morning. I’m not joking."-Karen, FloCrit Class of 2022

What happened between the age of 16 to 21? You've guessed it! Karen discovered Florence Crittenton Services and took advantage of nearly every resource on FloCrit's campus, graduating with the class of 2022. At Pathways to Empowerment: Launching the Future, Karen will share her vibrant personality as she recounts the transformative changes that occurred when she enrolled at FloCrit.

Zonta Club of Denver II is glad to support Florence Crittenton programs.
